The Method

KonMari® Method

“Keep only those things that speak to
your heart. Then take the plunge and
discard all the rest. By doing this, you
can reset your life and embark on a
new lifestyle.”
Marie Kondo

What is the KonMari® Method?

This method was invented by Japanese tidying expert and best-selling author Marie Kondo. Marie took tidying to a whole new level, teaching that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never have to do it again.

The KonMari® method recommends tidying by category- not by location- starting with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items) and lastly, sentimental items. Its philosophy is centred around only keeping those things that speak to your heart, and discarding items that don’t, releasing them from your space with gratitude.

Clothes

This category includes every garment including seasonal items and for special
occasions as well as subcategories like shoes, handbags, jewellery and accessories.

Books

This category includes all types of books like cookbooks, visual books (art, coffee
table), and magazines as well as subcategories like CD’s and DVD’s.

Papers

This category is about your physical documents (legal documents, bank/credit card statements, bills, receipts, certificates, warranties, manuals, etc.) and it includes also all kind of loose papers like notes, non-sentimental greeting cards, invitations, etc.

Komono

This category is the broadest of all. Komono is Japanese and translates best with miscellaneous. This category will be separated into subcategories for Kitchen Komono, Bathroom Komono, Office Komono, etc. This category usually contains shared items of other family/household members and therefore requires certain teamwork and acceptance in the process. Belongings of children are not part of this category unless otherwise agreed.

Sentimental

This category is the hardest to declutter, hence it’s the last one. By the time we will reach to this stage, you have practiced the method and you will be able to master this category as well. It includes photos, letters, children’s artwork, gifts, clothing items from important milestones, but also any other item that carries a deep memory for you and is therefore hard to decide on.

The Home Object primarily uses the KonMari® Method, not only due to its effectiveness, but  because it focuses on being mindful, introspective and forward thinking. It allows each session to be highly personalised, providing you with the most effective tools to achieve a life that sparks joy.
